A brief History
Australian Lowline Cattle have been in New Zealand since near the development of
ALCA in the early 1990’s. In fact, Kiwi’s owned the largest foundation Lowline herd Brambletye Stud based in Australia. Small animals were expensive and were seen as new and exciting, requiring less pasture than their larger counterparts while retaining the high-quality beef qualities inherited from their Trangie Angus herd predecessors.
Brambletye Stud among other enthusiasts, developed elite beef markets in Australia
and brought embryos to NZ which sparked several New Zealand based Lowline Studs
who were involved with exporting small Lowlines across the globe. The smaller the
animal, the higher the price tag! A lot of money was made and lost again as people
couldn’t realize any ongoing financial value in these small cattle.
Lowline Cattle in NZ now
Today, New Zealand enjoys modest growth and stable ALCA membership as people see
Australian Lowline cattle in a new light. Gone are the boom-and-bust days that saw the breed explode with popularity and crash again which nearly saw the breed disappear.
New Zealand ALCA members are a diverse group who have found their own value in the cattle we love to look at and be with.
We have Lowlines as
- Pets

people - Beef; homegrown freezer beef and commercial beef production where larger framed Lowlines meet freezing work specs easily
